Futurama unites and inspires Youth: the story of Beehive's job readiness workshops

The job readiness workshops led by Beehive, part of theFuturama project, have concluded. Futurama was selected by "Con i Bambini" under the Fund for combating educational poverty and co-financed by the Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. Through a series of practical workshops, the job readiness pathways aimed to develop essential soft skills among students in the schools of Erice and Palma di Montechiaro, such as communication, teamwork, and time management. The enthusiastic participation and significant transformations observed in the students highlight the importance of investing in soft skills to promote personal and professional growth.

Integrated Approach to Job Readiness

In the Futurama project, Beehive implemented a comprehensive and multifaceted educational approach, divided into four main pathways, each offering students a rich and engaging learning experience:

  • Job Shadowing: Students had the opportunity to observe professionals at work in various sectors. This direct experience allowed them to immerse themselves in the real world of work, exploring different careers and gaining practical insights into various professions. By shadowing professionals in coworking spaces, students learned the importance of punctuality and professionalism, while also honing their observation and active learning skills.
  • Soft Skills: This pathway focused on essential soft skills, increasingly recognized as critical for success in both academic and professional settings. The program aimed to develop fundamental abilities such as time management and public speaking. Students learned how to plan their days effectively, prioritize tasks, and achieve their goals more efficiently. Additionally, through practical exercises, they improved their ability to communicate confidently, learning how to structure a speech, use body language, and manage performance anxiety.
  • Career Orientation Pathway: The most extensive of the pathways, it included professional orientation activities, practical workshops, and job interview simulations. Students worked on creating effective resumes and cover letters, enhancing their communication and self-presentation skills. They also gained a better understanding of the labor market dynamics and the competencies required by employers, further developing their soft skills.
  • STEAM Orientation: Students had the opportunity to engage with prominent figures in the STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), exploring the careers of young professionals both locally and nationally. They learned about ELIS, a nonprofit organization that collaborates with schools and companies on orientation and training activities, promoting innovation projects alongside large corporations and startups. Speakers included Salvatore Novara, who shared his experience as a young Sicilian entrepreneur in the online agro-food trade, and Marco Milella, a young software developer at the Japanese multinational NTT Data. These encounters inspired students to consider careers in STEAM fields, demonstrating how passion and dedication can lead to professional success.

Positive Impacts

The workshops had a significant impact on many students, who experienced profound personal transformations. Initially shy and reserved students gained new confidence, improving their interaction and active participation skills. Thanks to targeted communication and leadership exercises, these students learned to express themselves more clearly and take initiative in group activities. Chiara, a student from the Socio-Sanitary Institute Sciascia Bufalino, shares: “During the school year, thanks to the Futurama project, we had the opportunity to experiment with and learn various techniques that we will use in our future professional lives. Besides creating a curriculum vitae, we also meticulously edited and analyzed its content. From this experience, I take away not only the memories of group activities but also many fundamental teachings that will form the basis of my future career.”

The project also helped students who struggled to collaborate with their peers. Through role-playing games and simulations requiring teamwork and problem-solving, these students significantly improved their ability to work in teams. Many became more open and willing to cooperate, demonstrating unexpected leadership skills during class projects, earning praise from teachers.

A Project Looking Towards the Future

The positive impact of the job readiness workshops highlights the crucial role of integrating soft skills into the school curriculum to prepare young people for the challenges of the modern world. The Futurama project has demonstrated that with the right support and methodologies, every student has the potential to excel and grow, not only academically but also personally.

The Futurama project was selected by "Con i Bambini" under the Fund for combating educational poverty and co-financed by the Fondazione Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. The Fund was created through an agreement between banking foundations represented by Acri, the National Forum of the Third Sector, and the Government. It supports initiatives aimed at removing economic, social, and cultural barriers that prevent children from fully benefiting from educational processes. The social enterprise Con i Bambini, a non-profit organization entirely owned by the Fondazione CON IL SUD, was established in June 2016 to implement the Fund's programs.*www.conibambini.org*
