Micropolis: three training days on proper nutrition for pregnant women and children in Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, and Agrigento

From October 28 to 30, three intensive training days focused on well-being and proper nutrition for pregnant women and children aged 0-6 took place in the educational microspaces of Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, and Agrigento. The meetings, organized within the project “Micropolis - A New Model of Community Welfare,” engaged numerous families from peripheral neighborhoods, emphasizing the importance of accessible and quality nutritional education for the younger and more vulnerable segments of the population.
The Micropolis project was selected by Con i Bambini through the Fund for Combating Child Educational Poverty and aims to overcome the fragmentation and discontinuity of services aimed at children in these three popular peripheries.

The Food Box 1000 Days Action: Nutritional Support for Mothers and Children
The training days are part of the Food Box 1000 Days action, an initiative by Micropolis carried out by the Fondazione Comunitaria di Agrigento e Trapani to promote the health and well-being of families through access to healthy products from local short supply chains. In previous months, Dietitian Giada Pia Lentini developed two specific dietary guidelines—one for pregnant women and another for children aged 0-6—and defined high-nutritional-value contents for the food boxes. Collaboration with Fa Bene Sicilia, a social enterprise promoting sustainable local productions, made it possible to prepare and distribute 210 food boxes to families in economic fragility across the three microspaces, improving access to healthy and sustainable food choices.

The Impact of Training in Educational Microspaces
The educational microspaces of Micropolis, active in the peripheral urban contexts of Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, and Agrigento, served as the focal point for training activities, providing a welcoming environment suitable for various family situations. The meetings, led by Dietitian Giada Pia Lentini, offered mothers practical tools to improve nutrition during pregnancy and in the early years of their children’s lives, addressing their questions and providing support for daily choices. Additionally, each family received Food Boxes containing local products essential for proper nutrition. The training days represented a fundamental opportunity for participating families, creating moments for discussion and in-depth exploration to raise awareness and support families in making informed and sustainable choices for their daily well-being.
