TILT! Students from the Galileo Galilei Institute of Canicattì on a study visit to Amazon's Logistics Hub in Catania

On 26 January, students from the Galileo Galilei Institute of Canicattì (AG) had the unique opportunity to learn more about the use of technology in modern logistics through a guided study visit to the Amazon sorting hub in Catania.

This was an initiative realized within the framework of 'TILT! Female Empowerment and Gender Equality', an educational program on STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) implemented by the Agrigento and Trapani Community Foundation at the Galileo Galilei Institute in Canicattì. TILT! is based on the 'Challenge Based Learning' method (i.e. working on the solution of a problem in the social sphere in the community) and aims to raise awareness among young people on the importance of gender equality in the professional world.

Thanks to the TILT! project, the young participants had the opportunity to peek behind the scenes of the use of the latest technologies in Amazon's logistics network. Welcomed by the center's staff, the students had a meaningful learning experience, exploring in detail the complex processes that characterize Amazon's logistics centers: delivery stations, such as the one in Catania, and fulfillment centers.

The meeting offered a complete overview of supply chain processes, starting from the initial receipt of the order, through storage, picking, packaging, labeling, to the moment when the package arrives in the hands of the customer. In these processes, the students were able to observe the crucial role of technology, but also the equally crucial role of all people involved. The visit made it clear that STEAM has no gender boundaries and that individual aspirations can find expression in a technologically advanced environment. During the visit, the students also learnt how technologies can support efficient resource management and reduce environmental impact, for example to reduce packaging waste or optimize deliveries.

The visit to Amazon's delivery station in Catania was a significant step towards creating a broader perspective for the boys and girls to value sustainable and inclusive development on technology and the opportunities it offers for communities, including in terms of employment impact.
